Moody Blues Set Lists

Beginning February 16, 2000, avid Moody Blues fan, Jim Wehner was kind enough to post a compilation of Moody Blues tour set lists on the Moody Blues Usenet newsgroup (alt.music.moody-blues).  This is the outcome of his handiwork.  Many thanks Jim!
Jim Wehner: "Since old Moody Blues set lists seems to be of some interest, and I have
many set lists in a file, I will do a little cut & paste, and post what I
have."
The first one is from 1970:
6/23/70 - Filmore East
Gypsy
Sunset
Dr Livingston, I Presume
Never Comes The Day
Peak Hour
Tuesday Afternoon
Question
Are You Sitting Comfortably?
The Dream
Have You Heard (Part 1)
The Voyage
Have You Heard (Part 2)
Nights in White Satin
Legend Of A Mind
Ride My See Saw
This is the same show as the 1969 "Caught Live" except for the addition of
Question.
I don't have the *complete* set list for the 12/3/70 show at Stanford
University, but two songs added from AQOB (their newest album at the time)
were "Tortoise and the Hare" and "Melancholy Man."

Question
Ride My See-Saw
Interestingly, "Isn't Life Strange" is nowhere to be found. Maybe the
Moodies didn't start playing it until the Octave tour.
I have an incomplete set list for their January, 1974 shows in
Japan (their final shows with Mike Pinder), which is the same as the
above except for Q & RMSS. The set I have ends with IJAS, but, I'd bet
they finished with those two.

Question
Ride My See-Saw
That was the first time that I realized that Graeme did not recite all the
poems on the albums. Until the day of that concert, I did not know that
Mike Pinder was gone (and that it was *his* voice reciting The Balance on
AQOB).
Of note was Graeme's overuse of what I refer to as "Space Invaders" sound
effects, via electronic drums. I still wish that a concert from this tour
would be released on cd. It was fantastic!
Tomorrow, I'll try to post the set lists from the 80's that I have.

@ These 2 may have been reversed. Otherwise, the order is correct. "The
Day We Meet Again" was played on the 1st leg of the '81 tour (my brother
told me that they played it at the L.A. Forum).
I attended 2 shows in November, 1981. It amazes me that they played every
song except 1 from the LDV album.

* NEW SONGS from "The Present" album
They also played "It's Cold Outside Your Heart" at the first show of the
1983 tour, which I attended (10/17/83 - Hartford Civic Center). They did
*not* play it at the next night's show in Worcester, MA, which I
also attended. Randy Salas of Higher & Higher magazine told me that, as
far as he knows, they dropped it completely after that 1st show.
Of note was their use of taped background vocals, at least for SATW. At
one show, John missed his cue to start singing the first verse, and, as
the group was playing through the intro a second time, the taped vocals
kicked in - "SITTING AT THE WHEEL" - OOPS!
Stevie Ray Vaughn was the opening act for the 3 shows that I saw in '83.
I am not certain, but they probably played this same set on the 1984
"Summer Nights" tour (I attended 2 shows in July '84).

This was there first tour with additional musicians. Janis Liebhart
& Wenndy Mackenzie on vocals and Bias Boshell as the #2 keyboard player.
You can see the three of them in the video for "Running Out of Love" which
was filmed at the Springfield Civic Center in Oct. '86 (but, dang it, I
was on vacation in Hawaii at the time).

I saw them twice in the Summer of '88 with John Kilzer Band opening & in
October '88 with Jack Bruce opening.
Janis & Wenndy were gone, replaced by Noami Starr & Shawn Murphy (now in
Little Feat). Also, Bias Boshell left for either the '87 or '88 tour
(replaced by Guy Allison on keyboards,) but returned the following
year. So, except for one tour, Bias has been with the Moodies since 1986.

* NEW SONGS from "Keys of the Kingdom" album
Patrick Moraz was now out, and Paul Bliss in. Gordon Marshall added as
2nd drummer. New back up singers were Sue Shattuck and June Boyce. Paul,
Gordon and Sue remain with the group, almost 9 years later.
I saw them once in the August & once in December. The December show,
at the Paramount in Springfield, MA, featured Justin performing Forever
Autumn (accompanied only by Paul & Bias). It was pure magic! (I don't
recall *when* they played it, in the order of the show)
In September, there was a 10 song show, broadcast on the radio from the
Whiskey in L.A. They played LTSY, Tuesday Afternoon, the 3 new songs &
the perennial final 5.
Although I saw 4 shows in 1992, I never wrote down the set lists. I'm
guessing that they played the same show as the did in 1991. One show that
I attended was a double bill with Chicago at Blossom Center in Ohio. If
someone has the *definitive* 1992 set list, please post it.

It was December 11, 1991 8:00 PM, Parmount Theatre, WNEW-FM Christmas
concert for UCP.
Didn't Bias or someone accompany him?

They played the casinos in the Winter/Spring of 1993. I don't have a set
list for any of those shows.
But, I saw them twice on their *first* orchestral tour in the Summer of
1993, and the show was as follows:
1993 Orchestral Tour
1st set
Orchestral Overture / Late Lament
Tuesday Afternoon
For My Lady
New Horizons
Lean On Me (Tonight)
Voices in the Sky
Say it with Love
Emily's Song

The Other Side of Life

Nights in White Satin
Legend of a Mind
Question
Ride My See Saw
I read a couple of reports that they played "Gypsy" at the 9/14/93 show in
Concord, CA. I don't know if the omitted any other song or simply added
"Gypsy." But, the report of the Autumn '93 UK tour (specifically
Wembley) indicated that the dropped Voices in the Sky, slid New Horizons
into that spot & played Gypsy after For My Lady. The also dropped LTSY as
the 2nd set opener.
Once again, they hit the casinos later in the year, and I don't have a set
list.

Question
Ride My See Saw
June Boyce was replaced by Tracy Graham in '93 or '94.
In 1995, I believe they only did the Casinos, once in the Spring & once in
the Fall. They also played some kind of benefit show in New York
City. Set lists, anyone??
Jim

They played the casinos again in the Spring. I don't have a set list.
I saw them once in '96 - June 16 at Great Woods in Mansfield, MA -

Question
Ride My See Saw
I read a comment that they also played Lovely to See You to open the 2nd
set at another show.
For the Fall '96 Casino shows, Graeme recited "The Dream" to open the
show. LOM(T) was slid down to fill Slide Zone's spot, and Talking Out of
Turn was brought back & played after Eternity Road.

Question
Ride My See Saw
This was the first time that the Moodies played a not yet released song in
concert since the early 70's (I think they played Question or Isn't Life
Strange before they were released, but I'm not certain).
Everyone probably knows what they've played in the last 2 years. Right?
If so, then I'll stop the posting of set lists right here.
