Surf Guitar Legend Dick Dale Plays

The Birchmere!

Dick Dale, The King of Surf Guitar, was in great form at his April 17, 2000 performance at Alexandria, Virginia's Birchmere Music Hall.

What you will see here are a few after the show shots of Dick Dale.  Due to restrictive venue policies, I was unable to take my camera into the show (*see my commentary below on this).  However, I did take some great shots the year before, which are similar to this event, so check them out here.

This was fan Lisa V's first-time to see Dick Dale.

Lisa was selected to get up on stage and hold up music while Dick played his horn on a number.  The audience loved it!

Gordon B., who had seen Dick before, brought Lisa.  Here we see both Gordon and Lisa with the surf guitar king.  Gordon looks like he enjoyed the show and having his picture made with Dick. Smile Gordon!

Yes, your omnipresent, crazy photographer and webmaster with Dick Dale.  I guess I DO qualify as a "Dick Head," as this is the third time I have seen him.

Dig my tie-dye tee, how 1960's!

* This is a slight commentary and indeed barb aimed at The Birchmere, and other venues that are overly restrictive so far as photography, fan interaction, etc.  I can understand, that many performers (and the audience) do not want flashes constantly bombarding them throughout a performance, but another reason may simply be that the performer/venue wants to have control over their presented image, or fear that captured images may be used for commercial gain.  While this may be valid, there also needs to be some leeway for true fans to capture the moment on film.  In fact, I would assert that this is beneficial to the performer in that it energizes the fan, and they can share it with others (i.e. it is great free publicity).  Unfortunately, I find I must practically smuggle in my camera, and then feel like a criminal for simply snapping a few photos.  Fans pay good money to see performers, and there should be a happy medium so far as taking photos and fan access.
