  Fifty Years Of Surf Music!

John Blair, noted musician and surf music historian has written a must read article on

the origins of surf music.  He states: “Let’s Go Trippin” by Dick Dale & The Del-Tones. Widely considered to be the first surf instrumental recording, it was released on Dale’s own record label (Deltone) in September, 1961. Dale and his band were packing them in every weekend at the huge Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa."

Photos Are Posted For Dick Dale's 2007 Birchmere Show!!

Guitar Legend Dick Dale played to a full house June 6, 2007 at The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA.

Not only did he play his classic gold Fender guitar called Beast, but he also played trumpet, harmonica, and  piano!  Wow, talk about one multi-talented surfer dude!

Rad bass player Sam Bolle did great work, and Bryan handled sticks really well!

Check out this video clip of Dick performing portions of Let's Go Trippin' and Peppermint Man.

Thanks to T for helping me get a great seat, and the many Dickheads (Dick Dale fans) on hand, including Charlie, Steve, T's friend Megan, Sam, Jeff, and many more!

Dick met with many fans after the show, signing 'stuff,' and posing for photos.  The fans love this interaction, and Dick does too!

So, all I can say is see you in 2008 Dick Dale!

Dick Dale, Nokie Edwards and Carlos at the NAMM show

Dick's "pool shooting Buddy," Carlos helps Dick maintain his website.  Carlos was cool enough to send me a couple of pics of Dick stuff he has hung on his wall.

And even more cool, Carlos sent me these pictures of Dick and legendary Ventures guitar great Nokie Edwards at the 2005 NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show.

Yep, that is Carlos with Dick and Nokie in the top photo!

Dick talks about his teaming up with Nokie at that show as being both fun and memorable, in part because the two playing styles differ.  Nokie picks, and Dick Shreds!

Carlos says the two guitar greats had the time of their life that night!

Also, don't miss Carlos wearing his Dick Dale Shirt and photos with Beach Boys Al Jardine
and David Marks!

Dick Does Denmark!

Dick Dale, Dusty Watson, and Sam Bolle did a major European tour in 2004 which included a stop off in Denmark.   Jan, who I met on a Surfin' To Baja with The Ventures and Los Straitjackets cruise, is such a big "Dickhead"(Dick Dale Fan) and surf guitar music lover, that he took in Dick's March 12, 2004 Rytmeposten, Odense, Denmark gig and next night awesome performance at Stengade 30, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Thanks to Jan for supplying these great photos!

"I'm A Dickhead!"

Yes, this is the shirt that the 'well dressed' Dick Dale fan wears!  It is Dick's Tribal Thunder
shirt from the 1990's with his signature gold Fender guitar on front and awesome back graphic. But of course what make's this shirt is letting the world know "I'm A Dickhead" which equates of course to Dick Dale fan.

First World Guitar Congress concert appearance Towson, Maryland.

---TuneFan in his favorite Dick Dale Tee with Bobby Whitlock, who was a performer on the seminal release Layla (note signed LP) by Derek And The Dominos outside The Saxon Pub, Austin, Texas.  Derek And The Dominos was founded by Eric Clapton.  Bobby handled piano, acoustic guitar, vocal and songwriting duties for the group.

You can see Bobby Whitlock performing "It's Too Late" with Derek And The Dominos on the Johnny Cash Show. The Dominos back up Eric Clapton, the great Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash on another song.  Of course Dick Dale loves Johnny Cash, having done his song Ring Of Fire for many years.

Autographed Dick Dale guitar picks from his May 21, 2001 Alexandria, Virginia and May 19, 2002 Annapolis, Maryland performances.   Dick's hard playing style using extra heavy-gauge steel strings plays havoc on guitar picks--and his fingers.

Dicks strings come from Dean Markley, a world famous supplier of guitar strings.

From Markley's web site: "Dick claims that Dean Markley Blue Steel Electric strings are the only strings capable of standing up to his shredding style of playing."
